It actually freezes around the same area, but not necessarily on the same item, this time it froze on "rvice", and the next time on "rvice". That's all I did, and after doing this, it won't boot anymore. I booted the freshly installed Mint 18, unchecked the box so the intro doesn't show up the next time, and rebooted. Apparently, after 18 installed, I can initially boot it up. So I put the live USB back in so I could reinstall Mint to my HD again to start over, and when the live edition is booted, I now have wifi from when I ran the fw installer before.Īfter some testing, I have discovered that my issue isn't in the Broadcom drivers, and I can make a new topic if someone wants me to. I really thought that was weird since I hadn't copied the firmware on the HD yet. When I installed the firmware on the live image, I couldn't then boot into the hard drive, it froze again on bootup.
I can always go with 17.3 if I absolutely have to, but I really wanted to try out 18, and the dead hard drive gave me the perfect opportunity to do so. It does its thing for a few seconds, I reboot, and I have wifi.

Sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer I also tried 17.3 again, and this works as expected, I run: I have tried installing all updates first, as well as just installing the firmware first thing, it makes no difference. My Linux repair skills aren't that great, and since it is a fresh setup it is faster for me just to install Mint again, I have done this 4 times now. However, doing this in Mint 18, the system fails to boot after I restart, it freezes on rvice. When I set it up several years ago, this was really easy, I plug in the wired adapter and install the firmware-b43-installer package.
The computer has a Broadcom BCM4312 wireless chipset in it, and needs the b43 firmware and drivers installed. I was on 17.3 and my hard drive died, so I decided to try 18 when setting it back up. I have a little Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 that I've run the cinnamon edition of Mint on for a few years.
